Netherlands and Poland Draw Blank in Euro 2024 Opener

Both Teams Extend Miserable Record

Poland Winless in Last 12 Against Netherlands

WARSAW, Poland – The Netherlands and Poland played out a goalless draw in their opening match of Euro 2024 on Sunday, extending both teams' poor records in the competition.

Poland, who are making their fifth successive finals appearance, have now failed to win a game in their last two European Championships. The Netherlands, meanwhile, have drawn their first match in each of their last five major tournaments.

The match was played in front of a sell-out crowd at the National Stadium in Warsaw, but the atmosphere was subdued as neither team was able to create many clear-cut chances.

Poland's best opportunity came in the first half when Robert Lewandowski headed wide from a cross by Piotr Zielinski. The Netherlands also had a few chances, but Memphis Depay was unable to find the target with a free-kick and Steven Berghuis saw his shot saved by Wojciech Szczesny.

The draw leaves both teams with a mountain to climb if they want to reach the knockout stages. Poland will face Belgium in their next match on Wednesday, while the Netherlands will play Italy.
